1960s

Arnold Newman (BBA ’62) is the executive director and founder of the International Society for the Preservation of the Tropical Rainforest, based in California. He advises tropical governments on preservation, is the author of three books on the topic and founded Africa Tomorrow, the Cathedral Rainforest Science Preserve (Costa Rica) and the Fossil Ridge Paleontological Park in California.

Paul Tocker (BBA ’60) received the Schenectady County Bar Association’s 50-year attorney award. Tocker resides in Delray Beach and previously was deputy corporate counsel for the city of Schenectady and an assistant county attorney.

James Weinsier (BBA ’68) is vice president of the board of directors for the Amelia Island Book Festival. He also is the author of several children’s books, most recently, “Where Do We Go? (Forever).”

Alan Bell (BBA ’76, JD ’79), founder of the Environmental Health Foundation, published a book, “Poisoned,” detailing his experience with environmental disease.

Kenneth S. Dubow (BBA ’76), a member of the School’s Accounting Advisory Board, has been with Kaufman Rossin for 37 years.

1980s

Wifredo A. Ferrer (BA ’87), former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, joined law firm Holland & Knight as a partner in its Miami office. He leads the firm’s global compliance and investigations team.

Brian Itzkowitz (BBA ’89), president and chief executive officer of Goodwill Industries of Arkansas, is leading a Goodwill partnership with Pulaski Technical College that will allow participants to graduate with a high school diploma and college credits if they so choose.

Scott Mueller (BBA ’85), CEO of Dealer Tire, was honored as a visionary entrepreneur at the Sixth Annual LaunchHouse Bootstrap Bash in Ohio.

George Pita (BBA ’83), a member of the School’s Accounting Advisory Board, earned the South Florida Business Journal’s 2017 CFO Award for Turnaround Achievement for his work as executive vice president and CFO of MasTec.

Sherry Ulsh (MBA ’83) relocated to Pennsylvania to take a job in indirect sourcing at the Hershey Company.

Tony Alhadeff (MBA ’95, MS ’95) is chief operating officer for Louis Poulsen USA, a design lighting supplier.

Jeffrey A. DeRose (MS ’96, MBA ’96) was promoted to director in Deloitte & Touche’s advisory function, helping to lead the National Cyber Risk Services practice in Orlando.

Steven Holtz (BBA ’91, MBA ’94) was named audit director in EisnerAmper’s South Florida office. He previously was a partner at Goldstein Schechter Koch.

Jeffery Levins on (MBA ’91) was promoted to senior vice president and market leader for north Dade, Aventura and Broward County for Bank of the Ozarks.

Gabe Navarro (BBA ’95) and Martin Pico (BBA ’92, JD ’96), both of MMG, helped put together a $38.6 million real estate deal for Kendall Corners in Miami.

José Suquet (MBA ’91) was appointed to the board of directors of Regions Financial Corp. He is chairman, president and CEO of Pan-American Life Insurance Group.

James Taintor (BS ’96, MBA ’99) published his first book, “Building Authentic Confidence in Children.”

Michiel Johan Van de Kreeke (MBA ’96) is a senior project manager at Bermello Ajamil & Partners in Coconut Grove and is currently leading a project in the Bahamas.

Christopher Wood (MBA ’93) celebrated his 10th anniversary at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey in Atlanta, where he helps lead the leveraged finance and investment banking strategy.

Jose Armario (MS ’03) was named to the board of directors of Avon Products Inc. The retired McDonald’s executive and UM President’s Council member will serve on the compensation and management development committee.

Johanna Barriga (BBA ’09) was promoted to audit manager in Ernst & Young’s fraud investigation and dispute services section in South Florida.

Jovita Carranza (MBA ’02) was tapped by President Trump to be the next U.S. Treasurer. She is the founder of JCR Group, which provides services to companies and non-governmental organizations (see story, page 17).

Chris Drew (BBA ’02, MBA ’04) of HFF helped put together a $38.6 million real estate deal for Kendall Corners in Miami.

Paul Farago (BBA ’02), the founder of direct-to-consumer men’s luxury footwear company Ace Marks, raised $1.26 million in the company’s second Kickstarter campaign.

Stephanie Farmer (BBA ’09) is on an international audit rotation in Australia as a client manager in Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu’s assurance and advisory quality and risk practice.

George Fernandez (MBA ’06) is co-founder and president of health care transportation technology startup Ride2MD, which won second place and People’s Pick in the Miami Herald Business Plan Challenge.

Katie French-Regan (BBA ’09) was promoted to audit manager at Deloitte in Jacksonville.

Joaquin Gonzalez Jr. (BBA ’00, MBA ’08), president of Tire Group International, was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame. The former NFL offensive tackle earned All-American honors as a freshman and was the only offensive lineman in Big East history to be named Rookie of the Year.

Cristina Hale (BBA ’04, MSTX ’05) became tax partner at PwC in July 2016.

Lucas Irwin (MBA ’07), who, with his wife, launched Steelhouse Guided Fitness Systems in 2008, opened its newest location in downtown Homestead.

Andrew Lane (BBA ’06) joined RSP Nutrition as vice president of finance and operations. Francesco Zampogna (BBA ’05) founded RSP.

Jas on Mills (BBA ’02) became a partner at Lanigan Ryan Malcolm & Doyle.

Stacy Nagy (BBA ’06) was promoted to mergers and acquisitions manager at Deloitte in New York.

Marcel Luis Navarro (MBA ’01) of MMG helped put together a $38.6 million real estate deal for Kendall Corners in Miami.

Laura Purvis Nolasco (BBA ’04) opened Beach Lion Studios advertising and design agency in Ellenton with her husband, Mike Nolasco (BFA ’04).

Roshan Shah (BBA ’03), a commercial real estate attorney at Scarinci Hollenbeck in New Jersey, was promoted to counsel.

Michelle Steele (BSSA ’05) was promoted to audit senior manager at Ernst & Young.

George Vail (MBA ’04), a capital markets specialist, joined Avison Young in Miami as a principal. He had been managing director of Ackman-Ziff in Miami.

Armando Valdes (MBA ’04) is assistant controller of GEICO companies, where he has worked since 2006.

In Memoriam.

Tate Volino (BBA ’92), 45, died March 3 after a high fall from the Angels Landing Trail in Springdale, Utah. The author and father of two teenage boys was an active member and supporter of the University’s alumni club in Sarasota.
